What do we mean by "Social" or "Welfare":
Using terms like being on 'the social'
or being on 'welfare' can conjour up different thoughts to different
folk. When we talk about these terms it doesn't mean necessarily being
poor and needing to be on the national social benefits system -
although many of us living at the Cairn will indeed be on one state
benefit....the state pension. So please do not make any wrong
assumptions when we have used the terms... Don't be 'put off' when we
use such terms.
What we do aim to do is promote interesting social benefits for village
residents and the surrounding community..... Somewhere easy to access,
go in have a cuppa and a friendly blether, without the necessity of
getting a bus or walk for miles. That's the 'social' aspect. As far as
'welfare' is concerned it's good to be able to talk to someone about
potential problems and maybe even how to get round or solve a problem.
Actually we think that often the 'social' and 'welfare' aspects are
just a likely combination of the two.
So enter the new community Cairn Cafe hub at Lilac Cottage. We are
already doing some crafting and other 'hobby' things there on most
winter Tuesday evenings. We think and hope that such use will evolve into
something good 'Socially' and to the benefit of the general 'Welfare'
of folk living at the Cairn.
Mind you.... we will not be suggesting any notion that folk living in
surrounding communities are not welcome (perhaps because they are not
actual residents of Cairnryan). On the contrary, providing such folk
are of good intent, their input and social contributions will be most
welcome. There is a local social and welfare benefit to the concept of
encouraging Wigtownshire based friends and relatives of the Cairn
community to join in with the social interactions of our Group's
activities.
Examples of activities that might augment the cafe operation (already
suggested by Cairn Community members) could include 'Games Nights
(Scrabble/Trivial Pursuits Nights/Dominoes etc); More crafting eg
Tunisian Crochet; knitting/sewing projects etc; Quiz nights; Bingo; or
just sitting about chatting. The point here is that it could be just
what folk want it to be.
Part of this function could include using the Cairn Cafe. Please remember any cafe 'profits', after running costs, are used
exclusively to fund village projects. Our Group is wholly a non-profit
based company (a 'company limited by guarantee', for those interested
in company classification and law).
Of course part of the social and welfare functionality includes the 'Resilience Planning' described on our Group Aims page.
